Per diems: the road money nobody itemizes

Two CRAs with the same base salary can take home meaningfully different money over a year, and the difference lives in a line most offer letters barely explain: the per diem.

If you are new to the road, per diem is the daily allowance paid for days you travel for monitoring visits. If you have been on the road for years, you already know the allowance is not one thing. The structure varies by employer, and the variance is worth real money.

The variants to ask about

Fixed daily rate versus government schedule. Some employers pay a flat internal rate; others peg to the US government (GSA) rate for the city you visit. GSA-pegged means an expensive city pays more. A flat rate means simplicity, and sometimes a quiet haircut in exactly the cities where you spend the most.

Visit days only, or travel days too. A Tuesday-Thursday visit is five days of your life door to door. Whether the Monday and Friday count as per diem days changes the annual total substantially for anyone traveling two or three weeks a month.

Receipts or no receipts. True per diems pay the rate regardless of what you spend; expense-reimbursement models pay what you can document. The first rewards the frugal; the second rewards nobody and adds paperwork to your Sunday night.

Cancelled visits. Site cancels on Friday for a Monday visit. Flights are booked. Whether you eat any of that, and whether the planned per diem still pays, is written policy somewhere. Read it before it happens.

Why this belongs in salary data

When people compare offers, they compare base salaries, because that is the number on the letter. An offer with a base a few thousand lower and a genuinely better travel package can be the better offer, and almost nobody prices it that way at signing.
