Statistical programming and biostatistics are the best-paid non-management seats in a trial on the public record, and unlike most compensation claims in this industry, the numbers are filed with the government rather than guessed.
What the filings show
Our salaries page carries per-person H-1B disclosures for the quantitative functions at IQVIA, all verified against the federal dataset. The statistical programming ladder reads cleanly:
- Senior statistical programmer: median of $122,400 across 89 filings
- Principal statistical programmer: $150,565
- Associate principal: $154,345
- Manager, statistical programming: $150,000
Biostatistics runs parallel and slightly higher at the top: associate biostatisticians filed in a $70,000 to $95,000 band early career, a biostatistician II at $119,920, senior biostatisticians in the low $130,000s, and advertised sponsor-dedicated senior ranges reaching $233,400 at the ceiling. These are exact numbers an employer put in a federal document, not crowdsourced averages. Read them as the shape of the ladder, adjusted for your city and level.
Why these seats pay
Two reasons. First, the work is submission-critical: the numbers these functions produce are the numbers a regulator reads, so the tolerance for error is near zero and the people who can be trusted with it are scarce. Second, the skill is transferable to better-paying industries. A strong statistical programmer or biostatistician can leave for tech or finance, and pharma pay bands know it. Scarcity plus exit options equals leverage.
The SAS-to-R shift is a pay story
The quiet change reshaping these roles is the slow migration from SAS toward R and Python. For years SAS fluency was the moat: regulated submissions ran on it, and the skill was specific enough to protect salaries. That moat is eroding as sponsors and CROs adopt open-source stacks, and it cuts two ways for your comp.
If you only know SAS, your leverage is tied to a shrinking installed base. If you know SAS and R and can move validated work between them, you are exactly the person every biometrics group is short on right now, and that shortage is a negotiating position. The AI tooling entering this space, which we covered separately, rewards the same profile: the value is moving from writing the code to specifying and validating it. The senior half of the job is the durable half.
The number to watch
Government filings show what this ladder paid before AI tooling and the SAS-to-R shift fully landed. Whether those numbers bend over the next two years is an open, empirical question, and self-reports will show the bend before any press release does.
